Apparently no one is beyond the reach of the PC police. If anyone is the assumed spokesperson for political correctness, it is Ellen DeGeneres. A faithful liberal and outspoken lesbian, the entertainer has placed herself firmly in the corner of all things politically correct. If the PC police are willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, surely that person would be Ellen DeGeneres. Yet, one tweet DeGeneres posted this week has her being accused of being racist.
This is what she did wrong. DeGeneres posted an edited photo of herself riding on the back of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. With Monday’s tweet came this caption: “This is how I’m running errands from now on.” Her point, of course, was that she could run around and get things done more quickly by tapping into the speed of the world’s fastest human.
But the image of a white woman riding a black man was criticized by thousands on social media. Her post has been described as “disgusting,” “insensitive,” and “shockingly racist.” Her picture and caption “tap into everything that is wrong with America,” one observer said.
In response, the popular talk show host tweeted that she is “highly aware of the racism that exists in our country,” but that is “the furthest thing from who I am.”
The original photo of Bolt smiling while running went viral following his gold medal win in the 100-meter dash. The comedienne frequently posts pictures of herself edited into topical moments and scenes from popular films and TV shows.
So Ellen DeGeneres is now among the legions who can be considered politically incorrect. It’s hard to think of a better example of how nutty the PC crowd has become.
