The Job Market is Improving… Really, Mr. President?

The Unemployment rate at the end of April stood at 8.1%, a definite improvement over the 10% reached in October of 2009. The rate stood at 7.8% when this Administration took office. It immediately started climbing (Bush’s fault, no doubt) until it reached that 10% number within the first year. Since that time it has worked its way down to a scant 8.1% last month. The Administration is patting itself on the back for the improvement and tells us that the lowering rate means that the economy is getting better under the socialist policies of the current regime. The message being delivered within the number is that the President deserves another 4 years to “improve” things even more. But is the unemployment rate telling the whole story? We’re not at all sure of that. There is another number that reflects quite differently. It is called the “EM Ratio” or “EPOP.” The EM Ratio is the ratio between the total civilian employment number and the total population. When this Administration took office, the EM Ratio was 60.6% according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. That ratio indicates that 60.6% of the working-age population was gainfully employed. The number immediately began to plummet under Mr. Obama’s leadership and hit a low of 58.2% by the end of his first year in office (Bush’s fault, no doubt). Here’s what is interesting, the number has only changed .2% during the next 2+ years. Don’t you think that it is time that this Administration took some responsibility for the lack of progress on a real number? You see, the unemployment rate is not reflective of the real situation. It does not take into account the number of people who have given up on finding work. It is easy to make an unemployment number come down if one removes people from the population. Someone said, “there are liars, damn liars, and statisticians.” The unemployment number, is prepared or touted by one of the above. I’ll let you decide which. The fact is that there are fewer men working today than any time since 1948. Fewer women are employed than any time since 1988. And, the 58.4% number is the same as it was in February of 2011. James Carvelle coined the phrase, “It’s the Economy, Stupid” for Bill Clinton’s campaign back in 1994. I think the adoption of the same phrase is appropriate for this election and for removing the current Administration from office. A job, or lack thereof, is the foremost point of contact with “the economy.” Economic theory means little to the average guy like me. We just want to know that our paycheck will clear the bank next payday. It takes companies having sufficient revenue and stability to assure that the check given us will be good. This Administration has certainly removed the stability and has hacked at the sufficiency at every opportunity. It has wasted billions on unproven technology to satisfy its tree-hugging base, encouraged the price of gasoline to the near-$4.00 level so that green energy would become “cost-effective”, and intentionally put people out of work in the oil industry. A simple return to drilling and production would drop the EM Ratio immediately, drop the price of gasoline dramatically, and boost our economy to the level where it belongs. Memorial Day 2012

Memorial Day is far more than the beginning of summer.  It is more than BBQs, opening of swimming pools, and a day off work.  Memorial Day is intended to call the nation to remember and honor those who gave their lives to keep us free. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day.  It began as a remembrance of those who gave their lives during the Civil War.  While, in 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day, it was observed in the South before the first “official” observance.  Actually, some 25 places have been named in conjunction with the origin of Memorial Day. The first seems to have actually occurred in Columbus, Miss., April 25, 1866.  In a Mississippi Index article the next day, the newspaper described a long procession to the Friendship Cemetery. At the cemetery, “the ladies assembled around the graves of the soldiers in the form of a square; from the center of the ground, an elaborate and eloquent address was delivered by Rev. G.T. Stainback, and following it, a fervent prayer by Rev. A.S. Andrews. The ladies then performed the beautiful and touching duty of decorating the graves with flowers … We were glad to see that no distinction was made between our own dead and about forty Federal soldiers, who slept their last sleep by them. It proved the exalted, unselfish tone of the female character.  Confederate and Federal — once enemies, now friends — receiving this tribute of respect.” It was some two years later, on May 5, 1868, that Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, the head of an organization of Union veterans called the Grand Army of the Republic,  issued a proclamation establishing Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. The Proclamation declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It stated, in part, “We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. … Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.  A crowd of about 5,000 attended the first observance.  The veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of General Robert E. Lee, was draped with bunting befitting a national funeral.  General and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant presided over the ceremonies in which hymns were sung and prayers were offered.  Flowers were then strewn on both Union and Confederate graves by children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of Logan’s Grand Amy of the Republic. By the end of the 19th Century Memorial Day was being observed across the nation.  However, it was not until 1971 that it became a National Holiday. Its meaning was expanded to honor all who have died in American wars. Unfortunately, by including it in the National Holiday Act, it is no longer observed on May 30, but rather on the last Monday in May making it a part of a 3 day weekend. The VFW stated in 2002, “Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public’s nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.” The Proud Americans agree with the VFW and call on Congress to pass Senate and House Bills that have been introduced in every session since 1999 returning Memorial Day to its original date; one day out of an entire year, dedicated to causing a nation to reflect, remember, and respect those who have given their all in service to this country. Selling U.S. Out….Again

The Second Amendment is precious to most Americans. The right to bear arms is, however, repulsive to liberals and they have tried all manner of maneuvers to take Americans’ guns from them. The latest tactic is to ratify a United Nations Treaty to regulate arms trade. The concept of the treaty was introduced in 2006 and was vetoed twice by the Bush Administration. The basis for the veto is the sovereignty of the United States Constitution and the unwillingness to subjugate our Constitution to any international body. However, within months of taking office, the current administration reversed that stance and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States would support the negotiation of the treaty as long as “consensus decision-making” was employed. She stated, in a written statement, “Consensus is needed to ensure the widest possible support for the Treaty and to avoid loopholes in the Treaty that can be exploited by those wishing to export arms irresponsibly.” Sounds good…right? Well, here is the interpretation…”Consensus” means that the United States can NOT veto any provision of the treaty. Hence, the language of the treaty is fashioned to stop weapons from reaching those who would challenge a government’s “stability and democracy.” That provision means that guns can be taken from American citizens who the administration believes might pose a threat to it. And, since “consensus” is the adopted method of acceptance, the United States cannot veto the measure and our Second Amendment right is negated. No vote of Congress, no vote of the people; a slick-maneuver that allows a United Nations Treaty to trump our Constitution. The right to bear arms is the best and last resort of citizens to keep in check any and every government. It is precisely why the Founders included the Second Amendment in the Constitution in the first place. Take that check away and the American citizenry is neutered and those in power rule with absolute authority. Yesterday, two congressmen, Rep. Denny Rehberg and Rep. Ben Quayle, introduced House Bill 5846, “The Second Amendment Sovereignty Act,” to counter the proposed treaty. The Bill would block funding for or the implementation of the treaty. Quayle said the “U.N. treaty is a direct threat to American sovereignty and the constitutional rights of all Americans. Congress needs to put its foot down, and make clear that it, not the United Nations, is the only body with the constitutional right to impose laws in the United States.” If this treaty is adopted this year, the President will be able to say that he never introduced legislation to limit the American right to bear arms, but will have accomplished the disarmament of America by giving a UN treaty superiority over our own Constitution. Sold out……without a vote of Congress, without a vote of the people. Clever, but reprehensible. The Proud Americans agree with Thomas Jefferson who said, “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” The Second Amendment is precious to most Americans.
